Basketball Games Online: Shooting Tips, Free Throws and 1v1
Updated
Most basketball games online come down to one skill: setting the power of a shot so the ball drops through the hoop. You set it with a swipe, a drag or a held key, and the timing of the release decides the rest. Below is how shooting works in different games, how to make free throws, how scoring differs, and the 1v1 and head basketball games where the other player fights back. All the games are in the basketball games collection.
How shooting works in basketball games
| Control | How it works | Games |
|---|---|---|
| Swipe | Swipe up to shoot; a longer swipe is more power, a tilt aims left or right | Aimball, Swipe Basketball Neon |
| Aim and release | Set the angle and direction with the mouse or a finger, then release or click to shoot | Basketball Dare, Playoff Basketball |
| Hold to charge | Hold a key to charge the shot, release to throw | Drunk Basket, Basketball League |
| Mouse button for force | Run with WASD, press the left mouse button to set the shot's force | Basketball Simulator 3D |
| One key | One key does everything, and the timing is the whole game | Basket Random |
In Aimball the mouse drag works the same as the swipe on a phone, so you can practice on either.
Shot timing and arc
Power sets the arc. Too little and the ball drops short of the rim; too much and it sails over or bangs off the backboard.
- Find one release that scores from one spot, and repeat it until it is automatic.
- When you miss, change one thing only: the power or the direction, not both.
- Watch where the ball lands on a miss. Short means more power next time; long means less.
- Physics games give you more to read. Basketball Serial Shooter adds rebounds, wind and obstacles, and asks for as many baskets in a row as you can make.
- On a timer, keep a steady rhythm rather than rushing. Basketball Kings 2024 warns that the longer you play, the less room you have for mistakes.
Basketball Master asks you to jump with the ball and shoot before the time runs out, with precise timing and good aim.
Scoring: points, streaks and bonuses
Every game counts differently, so check each game's rules before you play.
| Game | How points work |
|---|---|
| Aimball | 60 seconds; 2 points, 3 from behind the arc, 6 from far spots that appear now and then; three in a row puts you on fire for double points; a final half-court shot is worth 12 |
| Basketball Tournament 3D | 2 points for a basket, 3 for a clean shot whatever the distance; a fire ball bonus for scoring in a row and a bonus for using the backboard |
| Ultra Shot | Streaks build combo bonuses; four shot types against boss defenders |
| Basketball Kings 2024 | As many baskets as you can before the time limit |
Where streaks pay extra, as in Aimball and Basketball Tournament 3D, a shot you can repeat is often worth more than a long one that breaks the streak.
Free throws
In real basketball a free throw is an unopposed shot from behind the free-throw line, 15 feet (4.6 m) from the front of the basket, and each one made is worth one point, according to Wikipedia's article on the free throw. With no defender and the same spot every time, it rewards a shot you can repeat.
- Swipe Basketball Neon puts you on the free-throw line: swipe up to send the ball toward the rim. Miss and you start over, so consistency matters more than speed.
- Basketball Tournament 3D has a free throw competition among its six modes, with the backboard and clean-shot bonuses above.
The free throw habit works in any shooting game: same spot, same swipe or drag, same release.
1v1 games and reading the defender
In one-on-one games a player stands in your way, so position and timing count as much as the shot.
- Ultra Shot asks you to read the defender and pick one of four shots: normal, fadeaway, power dunk or floater. You also face three boss defenders, The Wall, Lightning Hands and the Oracle, on three difficulty levels.
- Basketball League has 1v1 and 2v2 matches where you dribble, dash, block and dunk. Alone you use the arrow keys, X to shoot or dunk and Z for the supershot; move to the shot or dunk spot, hold to charge and release. Climb through Bronze, Silver and Gold Cups.
- Basketball Swooshes is a one-on-one game where you need to be quicker and more precise than your opponent. Aim with the mouse and click, or drag on a phone and release.
Head basketball games
Head basketball is a simplified form of the sport: you against one opponent, a ball and a few buttons, with kicks and headers allowed.
- Head Sports Basketball uses the arrow keys to move and jump and Z to kick. Before each match you choose your character, the playground, the weather, the AI difficulty and the match length.
- Head Sport Basketball gives you four buttons: two to move, one to jump, and one to kick the ball with your foot or your head.
Basketball games for two players
These put both players on one keyboard or one touch screen.
- Basket Random gives each player one key, W or the up arrow, with fields, players and balls that keep changing. First to 5 wins, against the computer or a friend.
- Drunk Basket has wobbly ragdoll players: hold W or the up arrow to charge, release to throw, and every round adds a twist such as low gravity or a giant ball.
- Dunkers Fight starts with a countdown and a scramble for the ball. Player one moves with A and D and shoots with W and S, player two with the arrow keys.
- Basket Ball For Two Player is a one-button duel: tap to jump, and time each jump to send your ball into the central hoop before your rival does.
More games for two are in 2 player games, and 2 player games on one keyboard covers how to split the keys.
Trick-shot puzzles
- Basketball Dare has 40 levels of trick shots: set the angle and direction, then release.
- Blumgi Ball uses a slingshot pull, and Space teleports you next to the ball for chained combos.
- Hoops the Game has you throw the ball from one basket to the next without dropping it; a direct throw that touches no rim earns extra points.
Basketball games FAQ
How do you shoot better in basketball games?

Yes. Basket Random, Drunk Basket and Dunkers Fight split the keys, with W or A and D on the left and the arrow keys on the right. Basket Ball For Two Player also works with a tap on each side of a touch screen.
What is head basketball?
