Games Like Angry Birds: Slingshot Physics Games Online
Updated
Games like Angry Birds are slingshot physics games: you pull back, aim and release a launcher to knock down structures and the enemies hiding in them, with a limited number of shots per level. Angry Birds is a 2009 puzzle game by Rovio Entertainment. Below are original games by independent studios that play the same way, from bird and skull launchers to cannons and a trebuchet.
The Angry Birds formula
In Angry Birds you launch birds from a slingshot at green pigs sitting in structures, and you clear a level when every pig is defeated. New birds appear as you go, and some have their own abilities. So the skills are the same in every game of this kind: judge the angle and the pull, find the weak point of a structure, and make each shot count.
| What you do in Angry Birds | Games that ask the same |
|---|---|
| Pull back a slingshot, aim and release | Lazzy Birds, Angry Zombies in Sight, Mr Tomato VS Zombies |
| Use a special ability in mid-flight | Angry Cockroach, Lazzy Birds |
| Defeat every enemy before you run out of shots | Angry Cockroach, Angry Zombies in Sight |
| Topple a structure by hitting the right block | Big Smash, War Machine |
Closest to Angry Birds
- Angry Cockroach is a 2D physics-destruction game set in a kitchen. You pull a cockroach into a handmade launcher, aim and release it into fortified cartoon structures, then click once in flight to use its special ability. Defeat every pest-control guard before your roster runs out. There are 18 raids, 10 upgradeable cockroaches and 7 limited-use gadgets, and it plays on desktop, tablet and mobile.
- Lazzy Birds is a slingshot puzzle game with four birds. Blue is a simple bird, Black is a bomber, Green is a speed bird and Red is a heavy bird. Click and hold a bird to pull back the slingshot, drag to aim and release to launch, then click during flight to trigger its ability. You have limited shots to defeat all enemies on each level.
- Angry Zombies in Sight swaps birds for skulls. Hold the skull, pull the slingshot back and let go. The farther you pull, the stronger the launch. Hit the undead directly or break the structures around them, and defeat every one before you run out of attempts.
- Mr Tomato VS Zombies sends Mr Tomato from a slingshot to rescue a group of tiny tomatoes that zombies kidnapped. Break obstacles, defeat enemies and avoid traps along the way.
- Santa Vs Zomby makes Santa Claus the projectile. Zombies have raided his base and stolen the gifts, so you launch Santa at them and let physics knock them down, level by level.
More games with the undead are in zombie games, and Santa Vs Zomby fits right into Christmas games.
Knock down towers with balls and cannons
These keep the aiming and the falling blocks but drop the characters. They lean more on reading a structure than on hitting an enemy.
- Big Smash fires tennis balls from a cannon at a tower of cubes on a table. Cubes are made of stone, wood, ice, jelly, cardboard and puzzle pieces, and each material falls differently. You do not win by blasting everything. You win by finding the cube that holds the tower up and knocking it out. There are 69 towers, and some have TNT blocks. Click and hold to pull back the cannon, drag to aim and release to fire.
- Knock Balls PRO has you throw balls at structures until they collapse, without going over the ball limit. Every ball you save counts double on the next level, so a clean level pays off later.
- Knock Down Hit is a slingshot game about cans. Touch the screen, pull the pellet back, aim and release to knock down every can, across 300 levels.
- War Machine puts you in command of a trebuchet in 3D. Find the weak points of a fortification and attack them with different types of projectiles to drive the enemy off your lands.
Slingshot games for two players
Most slingshot games are solo puzzles, but the formula also works as a duel. In Catapult Of Janissary two players take turns adjusting the angle and speed of their catapults to hit each other. Bonuses called Smart, Ghost, Big and Bomb can help during the match. A hit on your first try, or a hit with the powershot, scores two points, and the first player to 5 points wins.
Birdy Mad Throw is a lighter single-player option: aim, charge and release an angry little bird across silly levels to smash obstacles and hit targets. For more games two people can share, see 2 player games.
How to get better at slingshot games
- Look before you shoot. Big Smash says it plainly: the win comes from the one block that holds the rest up, not from hitting the biggest pile.
- Control the pull. In Angry Zombies in Sight the launch gets stronger the farther you pull, so a short, careful pull is often better than a full one for a close target.
- Save abilities for the right moment. Angry Cockroach and Lazzy Birds trigger a special ability with one click in flight, so wait until the projectile is over its target.
- Count your shots. Lazzy Birds and Angry Zombies in Sight give you a limited number per level, and Knock Balls PRO rewards every ball you do not use.
- Replay a level once you know its layout. Your second attempt starts with the knowledge your first one cost you.
