Snake Game Tips: Rules, Turning Patterns and io Arenas

Updated

In snake you steer a snake that never stops moving: each piece of food makes it longer, and the run ends if its head hits a wall or its own body. The longer the snake gets, the more the game is about space, so move in patterns, keep open room ahead of you and turn before you have to.

Classic snake rules

The snake genre goes back to Blockade, a 1976 arcade game, and a 1998 version for the Nokia 6110 took it to mobile phones. The classic rules fit in one table.

RuleWhat it means for you
The snake keeps movingYou only choose where it turns
Food makes it longerEvery apple, dot or orb adds length
Walls end the runIn the classic games below, touching the border is game over
Your own body ends the runThe head must never touch any part of the snake
Speed can riseIn SnakeGamePro, the game gets faster as you score

Snake 2025 and Snake Game 2025 steer with the arrow keys or WASD, and SnakeGamePro with the arrow keys or swipes on a touch screen.

Early game: grow fast

While the snake is short, there is little to hit. Take the direct route to each piece of food and build length quickly.

The habits below start to matter once the body covers a good part of the board. From then on, every turn you make also decides where your body will lie for the next few seconds.

Turning patterns for a long snake

The zigzag

Sweep the board in rows, like mowing a lawn: run along one row, turn, come back along the next, and so on. Leave one edge column free as a return lane.

The body then lies in neat rows behind you, and the head always has a known path back. It is slower than chasing food directly, so switch to it once a direct route could trap you.

Follow your tail

In classic snake the tail moves forward as you move, so the cells it leaves open up again. When you are boxed in, steer toward your tail: it is the one part of the body that keeps getting out of the way. Leave a cell of margin, because the snake grows when it eats.

Turn early, never into a pocket

Do not enter an area unless you can see the way out. A pocket sealed off by your own body is a trap that only gets smaller.

Make each turn a cell earlier than feels necessary, especially as the speed rises.

Using the walls and edges

In the walled games, the border ends the run on contact, but it is also your guide.

  • Keep the body along the edges. A body lying against a wall blocks nothing behind it. A body across the middle splits the board in two.
  • Keep the open space in the middle. That is where the head can turn either way.
  • Take corner food along the walls. Come in along one wall and leave along the other, and check that the second wall is clear of your body first.
  • Check the rules. Not every snake game treats the border the same way, so read the instructions of the one you play.

io-style snake games

io-style games put many snakes in one big arena, the format of Slither.io, released in 2016. The key rule is different: another snake's head hitting your body ends that snake, and your head hitting theirs ends you.

  • Never cross in front of a bigger snake's head. Pass behind it instead.
  • Cut across a rival's path. If its head runs into your body, it is out. In SnakeZ io, you can then eat everything it leaves behind.
  • Circle smaller snakes. In gulper.io, you destroy rivals by trapping them so they run into your body.
  • Boost with a purpose. SnakeZ io boosts on Space, Snake Wars on Space or a left click, and gulper.io on holding the left button. A boost gets you out of trouble or across a path, but it also leaves you less time to react.
  • Pick fights only when you are big enough. Tailoff.io: Snake Dragon Arena gives the same advice: avoid larger enemies until you are strong enough to challenge them.

Some io-style games pit you against other players and some against computer-controlled snakes, so check the game's description to see which. More arena snakes, and the rules they share, are in games like slither.io.

Puzzle snakes

These take the snake idea and turn it into level-by-level puzzles.

  • Serpento: eat every apple, then lead your whole tail out through a door in the wall. It has 24 stages and three speeds.
  • Snack & Warp: 67 levels with portals, crates and a blade apple that splits your worm in two. You can undo freely, and there is no timer.
  • Grazing Giraffe: the giraffe slides until it hits something, and its neck fills the trail behind it. It has 64 levels and a rewind button.
  • Combo Snake: gems add colored nodes to your body, three nodes of one color vanish, and clearing the whole body wins.

Snake games to play

Pixel Snake and Snake 2025 are classic snake on a walled board.

For arenas, start with these. In Snakey: Hunters Arena, the level rises every 30 seconds, bringing obstacles from level 5 and armed hunters from level 10.

The snake collection has more of every kind, arena games are in io games, and quick score-chasers in arcade.

FAQ

How do you get a high score in snake?

Survive long enough to eat a lot. Grow fast while the snake is short, then switch to patterns, such as the zigzag and following your tail, so the body never seals you in.

Can the snake go through walls?

Not in the classic games here: touching the border ends the run. Some snake games have modes without deadly walls, so read the instructions of the one you play.

How do you kill other snakes in io snake games?

Make their head touch your body. Cut in front of them, or circle a smaller snake so it has nowhere to go.

Grow fast, then play for space: the snake that always has a way out is the one that gets long.
