Games Like Scrabble: Word Games to Play in Your Browser

Updated

Games like Scrabble are word games where you build words out of letters and score for them. Scrabble is a board game for two to four players, created by Alfred Mosher Butts in 1931 and named Scrabble in 1948. The games below are original browser titles by independent studios, and each keeps one part of it: a set of letters, a grid to fill or points for every word.

How Scrabble plays

Each player draws seven letter tiles and keeps them on a rack, hidden from the others. On your turn you place tiles in a row or a column to make a word, never on a diagonal. The first word covers the center square of the 15 by 15 board, and every later play has to touch a tile already there. You score the value of the letters in each word you make. Values run from 1 to 10 points: L, N, R, S and T are worth 1, and rare letters such as Q and Z are worth 10. Premium squares double or triple a letter or a whole word, and using all seven tiles in one turn earns a 50-point bonus.

You can also exchange tiles or pass. The words must be in a dictionary the players agree on before the game, and house rules differ on challenges: another player may challenge a word, and the penalty for a wrong challenge varies. The game ends when a player uses every tile and none are left to draw.

So Scrabble is three things at once: words built from a limited set of letters, a grid to fit them into, and points. The games below keep one or two of these parts rather than the whole board game. This table shows which.

Build words from a set of letters

  • Word Connect Game asks you to find all the hidden words in the letters it gives you and to connect them any way you like. It plays with the mouse or a tap.
  • Word Blossom has you drag a magic rope through letters to form a word that fits the empty squares. Little bonuses and hints are there if you get stuck.
  • Word Game 2026 has 1,000+ levels. You connect letters in any direction to find hidden words, with scenery that changes as you go. It has no time limits, and hints and a letter shuffle are there when you are stuck. You touch and drag.
  • Word Tangle hands you mixed-up letters and asks you to unscramble them into the right word.
  • Word Finder Revolution has you slide letters to form a hidden word, and you can ask for a hint.

Drag letters and word pieces into place

  • Word Shards is the closest to placing tiles: you drag letter shards into slots to build the target words. A valid word that is not a target earns extra coins, and there are hints. On a phone you tap and drag.
  • Word it UP has you drag letters to create words and complete each level. It plays with a click or a tap.
  • Word Mosaic puts a crossword-style board in front of you. You drag word fragments from a tray onto the empty slots, complete the target words, and find bonus words by experimenting.
  • Word Slide Game has you rearrange columns of letters into words until every letter tile has been used. Each correct word changes the color of its letters, and the level ends when all the tiles turn brown. It offers six languages with 50 challenges each, plus hints.

Words with points, and words on the run

  • Word Shuffle is the one that counts points: pop the letter bubbles to form words before time runs out. Each correct word gives points, and bonus bubbles are worth +10.
  • Word Runner Game turns word building into a run. You collect the correct letters to build the target word and avoid wrong choices and obstacles. A and D or the arrow keys move you.

More of this kind are on the word games page, and word search tips covers games where the words are already on the grid.

Tips for word-building games

  1. Spend the hard letters well. In Scrabble a Q or a Z is worth 10 points and a common letter 1, so where a rare letter lands matters.
  2. Try words the game did not ask for. Word Shards pays extra coins for valid words that are not targets, and Word Mosaic says you find bonus words by experimenting.
  3. Use a hint when you are stuck, before you guess. Word Finder Revolution, Word Blossom and Word Slide Game all have hints.
  4. Shuffle the letters to see them differently. Word Game 2026 lets you shuffle letters when you are stuck.
  5. Check for a clock first. Word Shuffle runs on a timer, and Word Game 2026 has no time limits.
