Games Like Clash Royale: Card and Unit Battles in a Browser

Updated

Games like Clash Royale are real-time battles where you play unit cards from a hand, pay with a resource and try to bring down the enemy's base. Clash Royale is a 2016 mobile game by Supercell. The games below are original titles by independent studios, from deck-building duels to games where you tap a card and send a unit at the enemy.

How Clash Royale plays

Clash Royale is a two-player battle in real time. Each player brings a deck of eight cards and holds four of them at a time. A card can be a troop, a building or a spell, and you deploy it by spending elixir, a resource that fills up on its own, up to a maximum of 10.

Each player defends one King Tower and two Princess Towers. A match lasts up to three minutes. You win by destroying the opponent's King Tower, or by destroying more towers by the end of normal time. A tie goes to overtime, where the first tower to fall wins.

So the game is about timing: which card to play, when, and how much elixir to keep back. This table shows where the games below ask for the same.

Card and deck games

These are the closest: you have cards, and cards become units or spells.

  • Castle Wars: Legacy is a tactical card game where you build your deck, defend your castle and break through enemy walls. You stack resources, summon armies and cast spells. Its description lists online battles with friends, daily tournaments, a campaign and quick matches against AI.
  • Battle of Orcs is a real-time strategy game about deploying units. You tap on cards to deploy orcs, try different combinations of units and aim to destroy the opponent's base.
  • Armour Crush is the same idea with tanks. You drag cards to deploy units, and the description says to deploy at least 3 tanks to advance toward the enemy base.

Units, gold and limits

In these games the resource and the cap matter as much as the cards.

  • Battle Of Heros asks you to marshal your resources to summon units. You earn coins by defeating foes, and there is a limit on active units plus restrictions on special units. Both bases heal by themselves, so the fight lasts until one falls. You click a unit to deploy it.
  • Stickboy War has you command stick warriors against the Imperial Berserkers. You mine gold, hire miners, shielders, archers and explosive units, and destroy the enemy gate to win each level. It has 10+ campaign levels.
  • YAOGUARD is a tower defense game set in the myths of the Shan Hai world. You pick a hero, tap the map to deploy it and use hero skills against endless waves of beasts and demons.

Short duels and quick pushes

  • Stick Roll Arena is a one-touch 1v1 game. You roll the dice to summon a stickman army, and your stickmen push the enemy team off the arena. Time your rolls to summon more warriors.
  • Tower War has you drag from your base to an enemy tower to send troops and capture it. It has over 30 levels with different tower arrangements.
  • Draw Defence is a tower defense game where you draw lines to summon soldiers against enemies that attack your castle.

More deck and strategy games are in card games and strategy games, and the strategy page lists more.

Tips for real-time unit battles

  1. Check your resource before you tap. In Clash Royale you spend elixir to deploy cards, and elixir stops at 10, so waiting too long wastes it.
  2. Mix unit types. Battle of Orcs tells you to try different combinations to make an effective attack force.
  3. Mind the unit cap. Battle Of Heros limits how many units can be active, so choose what you send.
  4. Send enough to finish the job. Both bases heal by themselves in Battle Of Heros, so a thin push can be undone.
  5. Learn the controls once. Battle of Orcs wants taps on cards, and Armour Crush wants drags.
