Flash Games Online: What Replaced Flash and What to Play

Updated

Flash Player is gone: Adobe stopped supporting it on 31 December 2020, and browsers now run games with open web standards such as HTML5 instead. You install nothing, and the styles Flash portals were known for, such as tower defense, escape rooms, drawing puzzles and idle games, live on as HTML5 games that open in a browser tab.

What happened to Flash

Adobe's end-of-life page gives the dates. Adobe stopped supporting Flash Player beginning 31 December 2020, and from 12 January 2021 it blocked Flash content from running in Flash Player. The page says open standards such as HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly had matured and that major browser vendors had disabled Flash Player. It also recommends that everyone uninstall it.

Flash was widely used for browser games. Wikipedia's article on Adobe Flash notes that many Flash games were developed by individuals or groups of friends because the software was simple. The HTML5 games below keep that spirit: small games with simple controls.

Can you still play Flash games?

Not in Flash Player, which no longer runs them. What you can play are HTML5 games, which run in the browser itself with nothing to install.

Two of them say in their own descriptions that they come from the Flash era: IdleByte RE calls itself a remake of a 2015 Flash game, and Sprinter calls itself a simple running game from the Flash era. No other game below makes that claim. The rest play in styles that were common in the Flash era.

If a page asks you to install Flash Player, skip it. Adobe's page recommends uninstalling the player, and the games below need nothing.

Tower defense

Tower defense was common in the Flash era: you place defenders, upgrade them and survive wave after wave. It suits a mouse well, and all four games here are played with one.

Evolution Era starts you in a primitive society and has you evolve through the ages by upgrading your skills and warriors. You summon units to defend your base and launch attacks on enemy strongholds. Use the mouse to upgrade, buy and send out warriors, and click to select units and buildings; tap controls work on mobile.

Mythinsects Tower Defense sets the war among insects: you defend your world from waves of mythical insect invaders, with quirky bug characters and a lot of upgrade options.

Hot Barrel Cats adds a twist. Only the cats on the wall can shoot, and every shot heats a cat up. When its burn time runs out, it jams until it cools. You drag hot cats down to the spawn zone, send fresh ones up, and drop two matching cats together to merge them into a stronger tier. A merged cat starts completely cool.

Hot Barrel Cats has 16 levels with 1 to 3 stars each and boss fights on levels 8, 12 and 16, and it plays on desktop and mobile.

Save The Kingdom is a castle defense game: you protect the kingdom from wizards, ghosts, demons and other monsters across 50 levels. You drag a castle to the spot where you want to drop it, with the mouse or touch, and the points you earn for every monster you destroy pay for new castles and upgrades to your 4 general skills.

Where to place towers and when to upgrade is covered in tower defense tips.

Escape rooms and point and click

In an escape game you are locked in a room and have to find items and solve puzzles to get out. The mouse is all you need.

Amgel Easter Room Escape 2 is a point and click escape game: you are locked in an Easter room and have to find items and solve puzzles to get out. Superstore Escape is described the same way, as a point and click room escape game where you click objects to interact with them and solve hidden puzzles. Its instructions list a mouse and Android mobile.

Habits for searching a room are in escape room games tips.

Drawing puzzles

Drawing puzzles replace the usual controls with a pencil: you do not steer the character, you draw the path or the barrier yourself.

Draw And Save The Stickman has you draw lines, shapes and barriers to protect the stickman from traps, falling rocks, spikes and enemies, and the puzzles get harder as you go. In Mazes Draw The Path you create the route to the exit instead of controlling a character: click and hold the mouse on the start, draw a path that avoids the walls and collect stars for more points.

Idle games and key mashers

IdleByte RE is an idle game about managing computer memory. You buy upgrades, get more memory and level up, and every 50 buildings raise the building level. With many YottaBytes of memory you can gain chips, and each chip adds 25% to your memory income. The goal is to buy the mystical upgrade. It is played with the mouse only, and its description mentions mobile support.

Sprinter is the opposite: no waiting, only speed. You race opponents over 100 meters, and they get faster. Click the left and right arrow keys rapidly to build speed, and time your taps accurately, or you stumble.

How upgrades work in games like IdleByte RE is explained in idle and clicker games.

Tips for playing Flash-style games

  1. Click inside the game first. Sprinter's own instructions say to click on the screen if it does not react to the arrow keys.
  2. Read the controls before you start. Most games here use the mouse alone, while Sprinter needs the keyboard.
  3. Use the pause key when a game lists one. Hot Barrel Cats pauses with Esc and mutes with M.
  4. Do not install anything to play. HTML5 games run in the browser, and Adobe's page recommends uninstalling Flash Player.

Flash games FAQ

Can you still play Flash games?

Not with Flash Player, because Adobe stopped supporting it on 31 December 2020 and blocked Flash content from running in it on 12 January 2021. You can play HTML5 games, which run in the browser, and a few say in their descriptions that they come from the Flash era.

How do I play Flash games without Flash Player?

Open an HTML5 game. It runs in the browser itself, free, with no install and no registration, so there is no player to download.

Are Flash games and HTML5 games the same?

No. Flash games needed the Flash Player plugin. HTML5 games use the web standards built into the browser, which Adobe's page names as alternatives to Flash content.

Can I play Flash-style games on a phone?

Yes, in the browser of a phone or a tablet. Evolution Era lists tap controls on mobile, Hot Barrel Cats plays in portrait and landscape, and IdleByte RE mentions mobile support. Sprinter uses arrow keys, so it suits a keyboard.

Pick a style you remember, and start with a short round.
