Idle and Clicker Games Explained: Upgrades and Prestige
Updated
Clicker games start with one action, clicking to earn, and idle games turn that income into upgrades that keep earning while you wait. Many games mix the two: you click early, buy things that earn on their own, then come back to collect what piled up. A lot of them add a reset called prestige, which trades your progress for a permanent bonus.
Clicker or idle?
Both names belong to one genre, also called incremental games. Clicker games put the weight on active input, idle games on automation, and many combine the two.
| Type | What you do | Example from the games below |
|---|---|---|
| Clicker | Click or tap for most of your income | Doggo Clicker: 50 upgrades, 21 accessories and two layers of prestige |
| Idle | Buy things that earn for you, then wait | Resource Empire: hire managers to automate each mine |
| Mixed | Click early, automate later | TheCheesiestClicker: tap a cheese wheel, then hire farmers and build factories |
| Idle RPG | A hero fights on its own | Endless idle RPG: your hero automatically fights waves of enemies |
| Idle merge | Merged items earn for you | Merge Factory Idle: merged machines generate more coins |
Wikipedia's article on incremental games dates the idle genre to Progress Quest in 2002 and ties its rise to Cookie Clicker in 2013.
The core loop
- Click to earn your first currency.
- Spend it on a generator, something that earns without clicks. In Deep Space Idle, ships are generators that start earning as soon as you buy them.
- Buy more generators and upgrades, and your income grows.
- Costs climb steeply, so progress slows down.
- Reset with prestige for a permanent bonus, and climb again faster.
Numbers grow so fast that these games often write them in short forms, such as 1T for a trillion.
Upgrades: what to buy first
- Compare cost with gain. An upgrade that pays for itself quickly beats a bigger one that takes ages to repay.
- Get income running without clicks. In tycoon-style idle games, automation comes first: in Resource Empire, managers run each mine for you.
- Watch the multipliers. In Deep Space Idle, clicker items multiply your output. In Moth Idle, each of 10 lamp colors boosts its own color multiplier, alongside 8 upgrades.
- Catch the active bonuses. In TheCheesiestClicker, a golden cheese floats across the screen, and clicking it fast pays a big bonus. Steady clicks also build a combo multiplier.
Prestige: resetting on purpose
Prestige trades your current run for a permanent bonus. Deep Space Idle describes it plainly: you exchange your current stack of currency, ships and clickers for a global multiplier. The game resets, but you upgrade faster from then on.
| Game | How its prestige works |
|---|---|
| TheCheesiestClicker | Reset your run for permanent Moldy Cheese, which powers up everything and opens a shop of permanent upgrades |
| Moth Idle | Two layers: prestige or rebirth to make the moths stronger |
| Doggo Clicker | Two layers of prestige |
| The Garbaggio Hotel | Enough wealth earns Renovation Credits, the game's prestige system |
| number merger | Ascend to earn prestige Crowns and permanent boosts |
| Revolution Idle RE | Upgrades, ascension and prestige |
A good moment to prestige is when progress has slowed to a crawl and the bonus on offer would clearly speed up the next run. Too early, the bonus is small. Too late, you spend a long time for very little.
Offline progress
Some idle games keep earning while the game is closed and pay you when you return. The games here that say so:
- Idle Factory Game Tycoon: offline earnings continue even when the game is closed.
- Idle Chop Miner: production keeps growing while you are offline.
- Resource Empire: managers keep each mine earning while you are away.
- The Garbaggio Hotel: profits keep coming in while you are away.
- Idle Space Business Tycoon: you collect idle cash income even when offline.
How much a game pays for time away, and for how long, depends on the game, so check its own instructions.
To find your idle game again, add it to your favorites. Favorites, recently played and the streak work without an account, and they live in the browser you use: clear its data, open a private window or switch devices and they start over. How the streak counts your days is explained in the daily game and streak.
Habits that speed up any idle game
- Click hard at the start, then let the generators take over.
- Read what each upgrade does: some add income, others multiply it.
- Spend everything before you leave, so your income is as high as possible while you are away.
- Prestige when the next run would be clearly faster, not at the first chance.
- Come back at intervals instead of watching the numbers climb.
Idle and clicker games to play
None of them needs an install or a registration, and all of them play free in the browser. Many more are in the clicker category.
Snowflakes Idle RE lets you collect snowflakes yourself or wait for them to fall, and Noise Clicker turns your clicks into upgrades that earn even when you stop clicking. For merging with an idle economy, see what merge games are.
FAQ
What is an incremental game?
It is another name for idle and clicker games. Numbers grow step by step as you buy upgrades, and the costs grow with them.
What is prestige in idle games?
A reset you choose. You give up your current progress for a permanent bonus, such as a global multiplier, so the next run goes faster.
Do idle games progress offline?
Some do. Idle Factory Game Tycoon, Idle Chop Miner and Resource Empire say they keep earning while you are away. For any other game, check its description.
What is a clicker game?
A game where clicking or tapping is your main source of income. Clicker games reward active clicking, idle games reward automation and waiting, and many games start as clickers and turn idle as you buy upgrades.
Click to start, automate to grow, reset when the climb slows: that loop is the whole genre.
