Piano Games Online: Virtual Keyboards and Tile Tapping
Updated
Piano games online come in two main kinds: virtual pianos, where you play the keys yourself with the mouse, a touch or a computer key, and music games, where tiles appear and you tap each one in time with a song. A third kind borrows the tile idea for a ball that hops to the beat. They play free in the browser, and the controls below come from the games' own descriptions.
| Kind | What you do | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual pianos | Play the keys yourself and change the sound | Virtual Piano |
| Tile-tapping songs | Tap each tile in time with a song | Piano Game star 5 |
| Beat hoppers | Time your taps so a ball keeps landing on the beat | Running Roadball |
Virtual pianos: play the keys yourself
A virtual piano is an instrument rather than a challenge. The differences between them are the sounds, the octaves and the way you play.
- Virtual Piano is a musical keyboard with a simple design. You can shift the octaves and other levels before you play, and change the type of piano you are playing with different sound effect features.
- Virtuals Piano has over 6 different types of sound effects. It shows letters right on the piano, you can change octaves as you wish, and you play it with the mouse.
- The Simple Piano lists a full piano keyboard with multi-touch, and says it works with all screen resolutions. A click or a tap plays it.
- Piano Music Box plays with the mouse or the keyboard.
Habits for virtual pianos:
- Find the octave control first. Virtual Piano and Virtuals Piano both let you change octaves.
- Try the other sounds. Virtuals Piano lists over 6 types of sound effects, and Virtual Piano lets you change the type of piano.
- Use multi-touch on a phone or tablet. The Simple Piano lists it, so several fingers can play at once.
- Pick Piano Music Box if you want to play with computer keys, because it lists the keyboard among its controls.
Tile-tapping piano games
These games play a song and ask you to tap the tiles, each one at the right moment.
- Piano Game star 5 is a relaxing music game with styles from pop and classic piano to K-pop, J-pop, EDM and hip-hop. You tap the black tiles, and the description says you can perform a song by yourself. A mouse click or a tap plays it.
- Music Tile Game is a fast rhythm game: you follow the beat and tap the correct tiles as they appear on the screen. A mouse click or a tap plays it.
- TAP TAP Music is a beat-tapping game. When the music video begins, you tap the ball tile as it reaches the scoring areas, and every tap is graded Perfect, Great or Good. Its songs range from pop, anime and classic to K-pop, EDM, rock, trap and hip-hop.
Habits for tile-tapping games:
- Tap at the scoring area. TAP TAP Music says to tap the ball tile as it reaches the scoring areas.
- Do not miss a tile. That is rule 2 in TAP TAP Music.
- Aim for Perfect. TAP TAP Music marks each tap Perfect, Great or Good.
Beat hoppers: rhythm games with a ball
These keep the rhythm and drop the piano keys: you steer a ball or a dot to the beat.
- Running Roadball guides a glowing ball through neon tracks synced with music. You tap or click to jump and change direction, time each tap with the rhythm, collect gems and earn new songs and balls.
- Hop Music Ball Game moves the ball forward on its own. Your only job is to move it left or right with the mouse so that it keeps landing on the moving blocks.
- Magic Dot Rush has sliding tiles that add control twists, and special themed tiles that change the scene when you hit them. A mouse click or a tap plays it, and treasure chests wait for completed tasks.
More one-touch games are in the hypercasual games category and in hypercasual games online. Games you can play with one thumb are in one-hand phone games.
