Sandbox Games Online: Physics Toys, Free Ride and Builders

Updated

Sandbox games online give you tools and let you decide what to do with them: mix materials, knock things over, build something and test it, or drive wherever you like, usually with no fixed goal. In a browser they come as physics toys, ragdoll and chaos games, build-and-test games, space and town builders and free-ride driving. Below are the kinds, with games from the catalog for each.

What a sandbox game is

Wikipedia's article on the sandbox game describes it as a game that gives you broad freedom to experiment with interacting systems. Many sandbox games have no win condition, so you set the goal yourself.

It also separates two ideas that get mixed up. An open world is about moving freely through a game's space, while a sandbox is about experimenting with its systems, and a game can be one without the other. The free-ride games below roam, and the toys experiment. Games where you gather and build to stay alive have their own guide: survival games online.

Physics and material toys

  • Physics Sandbox lets you play around with materials: powder and sand, liquids, lava, solids that can be split, gas and custom materials. Left click draws, right click erases, and you can drag and minimize the panels.
  • Draw the RailBall Physics gives you rails, pipes, planks, springs, accelerators and bumpers to build your own track for a rolling ball. There is no time limit: drag props onto the scene, tap start and watch the ball go.

Ragdoll and chaos toys

  • Kick the Zombie: Ragdoll Sandbox is a ragdoll physics toy set in a moonlit graveyard. Drag Gus the zombie and fling him, boot him with a giant sneaker, smack him with a frying pan, freeze him, zap him or blast him from a pumpkin cannon. Tools switch on a toolbar, and no keyboard is needed.
  • Cat Chaos Simulator is a 3D cat sim where you jump on tables, knock over cups, destroy computers and keep wrecking the furniture to push up your mess value. You play with a click or a tap.

Build, then test

  • Fort Builder Sandbox gives you three kinds of structure and various weapons and projectiles, with complete freedom to build the fort you imagine and train with the weapons. Keys 5, 6 and 7 pick a structure, the left mouse button places it or shoots, and 1 to 4 switch weapons.
  • Army Playground 3D hands you a large arsenal of combat units. Select them, place them on the battlefield and weigh the characteristics of each unit. You upgrade units, earn diamonds and buy more advanced weapons.

Worlds to grow

  • myDream Universe calls itself a sandbox space simulation. You start as a small asteroid that absorbs others to form a solar system, roam the universe and earn mass, because the biggest mass can destroy smaller ones. A sun with enough mass can turn into a neutron star or a black hole, and 100 save areas hold up to 100 different solar systems. You play with the mouse.
  • Interstellar Passage is a small construction game on unknown planets, in 3D. Its instructions say you can create freely in your own space.
  • Mine Keeper makes you a dwarf lord building a kingdom. Build houses and facilities, sell fruit to feed your people, mine deep for stones and gems and take your troops along, because there are monsters in the mine. WASD or the arrow keys move you, and a phone has a joystick.

More town and business simulators are in simulator games online and the simulation collection.

Free ride and open city

  • Eternal Drive is an endless free-driving area with 12 vehicles, among them a tank, a dozer, an airplane, a UFO, a drone, a helicopter and a police car. A key guide sits in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • ATV Stunts is one large map of bridges, ramps and tunnels with four ATVs to switch between. T slows time, F repairs the ATV, Enter restarts it, R restarts the scene and C changes the camera.
  • Desert Bus Conquest: Sand Rides calls itself a sandbox-style driving simulator with strategy and resource management. You run a bus from one desert town to another through dunes and dust storms and keep the bus in shape. WASD drives, and Space toggles the parking brake at the marked points.
  • Stick Rope Hero puts you in a sandbox world where you swing around an open city with rope skills and take on action tasks, with a click or a tap.

More free-ride maps are in stunt games online.

Tips for sandbox games

  1. Find out which button builds and which one removes. In Physics Sandbox left click draws and right click erases.
  2. Give yourself a goal. A taller fort, a bigger sun or a track that gets the ball home: with no win condition, a small target keeps you going.
  3. Keep several saves. myDream Universe has 100 save areas, so one system can stay as it is while you try something new.
  4. Find the reset keys in free ride. ATV Stunts has Enter to restart the ATV and F to repair it.
