Games for Couples Online: Co-op, Duels and Board Games

Updated

Games for couples online come in two kinds: games you play side by side on one device, and games where each of you joins from your own place. Many two-player games list two sets of controls for one keyboard, and a few offer a private room or a code for playing apart. Below are co-op levels you finish together, quick duels and turn-based games, with the online ones in their own section.

Two ways to play as a pair

On one device you share a keyboard, with one of you on W A S D and the other on the arrow keys, or you share a touch screen. The description says 2 players, Player 1 and Player 2, or same device. To play from different places you need a private room or a code, and the description says online room, private code or friends online.

A line that only says multiplayer does not tell you which one you get, so open the menu and check. 2 player games on one keyboard covers the key split.

Co-op games: finish the level together

In a co-op game neither of you can finish a level alone. Each of these is played by two people on one device.

  • Dog and Cat Sweet: a cat and a dog collect all the food and reach the doghouse as a team, and only the dog can open the bridge and the iron gate. It is playable on both mobile and PC.
  • Friends Pug: the brown dog uses the arrow keys and the grey one W A S D. Both collect their own food, get past obstacles and reach the nest together, and a bone gives a special power.
  • Dino Meat Hunt - New Adventure: the little dinosaur can jump to high places and the big one can destroy dangerous monsters, so the puzzles in its levels need you both.
  • Happy Devil and UnHappy Angel: a devil and an angel get out of hell by collecting the gold and the key and reaching the portal at the same time. There is a double jump and a touch control on mobile.
  • Repo androids for two: a team platformer for two players on one device. The androids can fold into mini-androids, and you reach the star by helping each other.

Duels: a few quick rounds

Duels are short rounds with a score, so you can play a few in a row and swap sides.

  • Neon Ping Pong: paddle-and-ball ping pong with neon graphics. Play the computer in 1-Player mode or a friend in 2-Player local mode; the settings change the paddle size and the maximum ball speed.
  • Pixel Sumo: knock your opponent out of the field to score, and the first to five points wins. One of you moves with W, the other with the up arrow key, and on mobile there are a red and a blue button.
  • Volley Lama: lamas play volleyball with random physics. In two-player mode player 1 uses W or the left side of the screen and player 2 the up arrow or the right side, so a phone or tablet works too.
  • Stick Archers Battle: guess the angle and distance and shoot arrows at each other as the environment and physics change. It has 1 Player, 2 Player and Death-match modes, and the first to 5 wins.
  • Wheelie Bike For 2 Players: the purple and green stickmen hold a wheelie, and whoever has the most wheelie time after 60 seconds wins. Player 1 presses W and player 2 the up arrow, or you touch the screen.

Turn-based games for a slower evening

Turn-based games need no second keyboard: you take turns with the mouse or your finger.

  • Checkers for two: play against each other, or against the computer, which has several difficulty levels.
  • Turkish draughts: moves and captures go horizontally and vertically instead of diagonally. Play the computer, another person on one device or an opponent online, or watch other games as a spectator.
  • Backgammonia: backgammon against the computer or against a friend in 2 players mode, with the mouse or by touch.
  • Mischievous Pairs: match pairs of cards, or challenge a friend in local two-player mode, where you keep your turn by finding matches before the 10-second timer ends.

Playing together from different places

A private room or a code lets two people who are far apart join the same match. These four say so in their descriptions, and each of you plays in your own browser.

  • Ludo Wizard: three modes: Vs Bot, Online with randomly matched people, and a private mode where you share a private code and connect to each other. Choose the private mode for your partner. The rules are in how to play Ludo.
  • Dart Duell: Timing Champion: X01 darts where you play the computer, track your statistics or challenge a friend in an online room.
  • Castle Wars: Legacy: a card game of building a deck and breaking through enemy walls, with online battles against friends, daily tournaments and quick matches against the AI.
  • Dominoes Battle: Domino Online: set up matches to challenge your friends and family, play the robots, or play people from anywhere in the world.

How public matches and private rooms differ is explained in multiplayer games online.

Tips for playing as a pair

  • Decide who takes which side of the keyboard before the first round. Player one is not always on W A S D, so check the controls in each game's instructions.
  • On a phone or tablet, look for touch controls in the instructions: Volley Lama splits the screen into two halves, and Pixel Sumo has a button for each player.
  • If a key does nothing when you both press several at once, the keyboard may be the cause rather than the game. Try another game with different keys.
