Games Like Learn to Fly: Launch and Upgrade Games

Updated

Games like Learn to Fly are launch-and-upgrade games: you send something into the air, see how far it gets, spend what you earned on upgrades and try again. Learn to Fly is a series about a penguin trying to fly. Below are original browser games by independent studios built on the same loop, with chickens, cars, rockets and paper planes.

The Learn to Fly loop

Every try is short: launch, fly until you stop, collect the reward and spend it. In Learn to Fly the distance you reach earns the money for upgrades, and the upgrades make the next launch go farther. The games below keep that loop, with different things in the air.

Launch, fly, upgrade

These five say outright that you get upgrades as you go.

  • Chicken Yeet has the whole loop in one game. You time a power meter for a perfect launch, steer through boost rings, collect coins and golden feathers, and dodge birds, balloons and meteors on a trip to space. Rewards pay for upgrades and new launchers, including a frying pan, a squeaky hammer and a turbo shovel. Click or press Space twice for a perfect start, steer with A and D or by holding the sides of the screen, and release to fly straight.
  • Stunt Sprint has you launch a car off ramps, smash obstacles and soar through 3D worlds. The farther you fly, the higher you score, and you upgrade speed, power and control and add new vehicles. Hold to launch.
  • Mr BounceMaster is about launching a penguin as far as you can, and its description says you control a polar bear armed with a baseball bat. Coins and diamonds pay for new upgrades and weapons. It plays with the mouse or touch.
  • Froggy Hop launches a frog into the air to hop across lily pads and collect coins. You power the frog up with upgrades, take on daily missions and pick skins that each have their own perks. A left click launches and bounces the frog.
  • Touchdown Hero Master puts you in the role of a quarterback who throws the ball as far as possible. Reaching far earns upgrades that make you stronger, and one tap is all the control you need.

Rockets, paper planes and cannons

If you want a launch that ends in the sky, start here. For more flying games see space games and airplane games.

  • SpaceFrontier is about the launch itself. Rockets have several levels, and you separate them at the right moment. Rockets can be upgraded, and one that flies high enough reaches other planets.
  • Paper Flight 2 has you launch a paper plane as far as you can. With each attempt you improve traits such as speed and strength, and the flights pass through places such as London and Paris.
  • Shoot the Turtle sends a turtle as far as it will go, and its description names cannons, bombs and jetpacks as the tools. It plays with touch or the mouse.
  • Kick the Chicken is a bird-launching game. You bat a hen with all your might to build momentum and send her as far as she can go across the farm.
  • Cannon Duck is about taking a duck as far as you can with cannons and testing your accuracy, and its description invites you to challenge your friends.

Slides, waves and hills

These games add a first stage before the launch: you build speed, then take off.

  • Dune Surfer asks for precision. Land smoothly on the waves and the ball launches higher, with a bigger multiplier and more coins.
  • Lifebuoy Planing makes you a flying lifebuoy. You slide down twisting slides to build speed, then launch into open water. Momentum, angles and timing decide how far you fly, and you chase distance records.
  • Dragon Fly puts you in the role of a dragon pup with tiny wings. You slide along curvy hills and time your touches to build momentum and take off, while the mother dragon heads out to bring you home.

Tips for launch-and-upgrade games

  1. Time the launch. Chicken Yeet gives a perfect start for a double click or a double press of Space, and in Dune Surfer a smooth landing gives a higher launch and a bigger multiplier.
  2. Steer a little, not a lot. In Chicken Yeet, letting go of the steering sends you straight.
  3. Pick up what is on the way. Chicken Yeet pays in coins and golden feathers, and Mr BounceMaster pays in coins and diamonds that buy upgrades and weapons.
  4. Raise what the game names. Stunt Sprint lists speed, power and control, so those are the numbers to upgrade.
  5. Come back for the daily missions. Froggy Hop has them, along with skins that carry perks.
