Merge games are puzzle games where you combine identical items into one item of the next level: two chicks make a bunny, two 8s make a 16. You keep climbing that ladder toward the highest item, and the challenge is space, because every merge frees room and every new item takes some.
How merging works
Every merge game has a ladder of items. Merging two identical items, or three in some games, gives you the next step up.
- In Cosmo Merge, two asteroids become a comet and two comets form a moon, on the way up to a black hole.
- In Animal Merge: Zoo Drop, two chicks make a bunny and two bunnies make a cat, up to the elephant.
- In number merges, the ladder is the numbers themselves: 2, 4, 8, 16 and on.
Most of the games here also set a limit: a board or a container that can fill up. Run out of room and the game ends, or the level gets much harder.

Merge-2 vs merge-3
In a merge-2 game, two identical items make one item of the next level. In a merge-3 game, you need at least three. According to a 2022 analysis of merge games, many merge-3 games give two next-level items for a merge of five, so it pays to wait until you have five.
Among the games here, Merge Blocks is merge-3: you match three or more identical blocks on a 5×5 board. Most of the others are merge-2.
Number merges
Number merges are the 2048 family: matching numbers combine into a higher one. In classic 2048 you slide every tile at once. In Merges Numbers you drag one tile at a time, and in Hex Merge Puzzle you place number blocks on a hexagon grid.

Drop-and-merge
Drop-and-merge games put the items in a container with physics. You aim, drop, and when two identical items touch, they merge into the next one. Suika Game, released in 2021, uses the same idea with fruit that merges up to a watermelon.
- Keep the big items together on one side. Small items then have room to meet their twins.
- Drop each item next to its twin. An item that lands on the wrong neighbor can stay stuck there for a long time.
- Watch the overflow line. In Animal Merge: Zoo Drop, the rule is simply not to let the jar overflow.
- Plan chains. Drop items where the result of one merge will touch its own twin, so the merges carry on by themselves.
Baby Merge: Puzzle Master has 11 animal tiers and Easy, Medium and Hard modes. Fruit Merge Arena climbs to the watermelon.
Board and order merges
On a board, nothing falls: you move items yourself. In Sweets Merge, you drag a candy onto an identical one to make a higher-level dessert. In Emoji Merge Madness, you click two matching emoji side by side, across six evolution chains of five tiers each. Merges Numbers and Hex Merge Puzzle are board games too, with numbers as the items.
Coffe Merge House adds a small business: you tap a generator to create a product, merge products into more valuable treats and serve customer orders for coins.
Idle merges
Idle merges add an economy. You buy items, merge two of the same into a better one, and the better items earn more.
In Merge Cyber Racers Game, your cars earn coins every time they pass the finish line. In Merge Beast Arena, you tap animals for coins and merge them up a ladder of 19 beasts. Idlle Cat Merge and Merge Cars: Defense keep earning while you are away, and Merge Tower Defense uses merged towers against waves of enemies.

Tips for any merge game
- Keep free space. A merge needs room for the next item, and a full board leaves you stuck.
- Group items by level. Twins that sit close together merge with one move.
- Look one merge ahead. Before merging, check whether the new item will have a twin waiting.
- Do not flood the board with low levels. Merge small items up before adding more.
- In merge-3 games that reward five, wait for five. Two items for five is a better rate than one item for three.
- In idle merges, spend on what earns. The upgrade that adds the most income per coin comes first.
