Games Like Celeste: Dash and Wall-Jump Platformers

Updated

Games like Celeste are precision platformers about climbing: you run, jump, dash and cling to walls through small, hard challenges, and a mistake sends you back only a short way. Celeste is a 2018 game by Maddy Makes Games. The games below are original browser titles by independent studios that ask for the same dashes, wall jumps and fresh starts.

How Celeste plays

In Celeste you control Madeline as she climbs a mountain. She can run, jump, wall jump, climb walls for a limited time and dash in eight directions in mid-air. The climb is limited by a stamina system, and green gems refill the dash without a landing. Chapters are divided into single-screen challenges, with checkpoints between screens, and optional branches hold collectibles such as strawberries.

An Assist Mode makes the game more forgiving, with options such as a lower game speed and unlimited dashes. That makes four asks: dashes, wall climbs, small hard challenges you can retry, and a summit to reach. This table shows where the games below ask for the same.

What you do in CelesteGames that ask the same

Dashes and wall jumps

  • Glimmer is the nearest in spirit. You guide a tiny spark through a world swallowed by darkness, relight lanterns across four chapters, and master precise jumps, dashes and checkpoints. Fast restarts keep it moving. A and D or the arrows move, Space, W or Up jumps (hold for extra height), and X or Shift dashes. Touchscreen buttons work on mobile.
  • Urban Echo is an action parkour game: run, jump, slide and climb walls across rooftops and avoid traps. Its controls list a double jump, a wall jump and a dash.
  • Neon Overdrive has you dash, double-jump and sprint across neon platforms while a deadly laser chases you. Shift dashes, and on mobile there are on-screen buttons for moving and dashing and a tap to jump.
  • Blocky Adventures has 50 levels across five worlds. X or Shift dashes, pressing jump again in mid-air double-jumps, and sliding down a wall and then jumping climbs it.
  • Lantern Wayfarner lets you run, jump, wall-jump and dash. Spirit platforms appear only inside your lantern's glow, and waylamps save your progress.
  • Ninja Platformer Rage has 50 brutally short levels. You throw your shadow with Shift, teleport to it with a double Shift, and climb walls and double-jump.

Climbs with checkpoints and stamina

Celeste is about getting up something. These games point you upward too.

  • Going Up Rooftop is a 3D parkour climb over city rooftops. You climb walls, leap between ledges, crawl through gaps and ride ziplines. You can play the Story, pure Parkour runs, or the Climb and Jump mode. Watch your stamina, hit the checkpoints and grab coins for new outfits.
  • Tower Platformer 3D has you climb a huge ruined tower in the middle of the sea. You jump across platforms, avoid monsters, collect coins and use portal checkpoints on the way up.
  • Lumen Descent goes down instead of up: 12 dangerous floors of difficult jumps, a dash and checkpoints. Shift dashes, and R retries.
  • The High Climb is an endless vertical obstacle course where one wrong move means a fall back to the start. WASD walks, Space jumps and the mouse looks around.

Quick retries and small rooms

  • Sneaky Spikes is a troll platformer drawn on notebook paper. Floors drop, spikes pop and doors bite across 60 levels, with stars to collect and a speedrun timer. Its own advice is to watch for traps and try again after each death.
  • Duck Shift sets duck tests on every level, with deadly spikes to jump over. A mistake starts your path again from the beginning of the level.
  • Cat Up is a one-button platformer with a pixel cat. You overcome 15 levels and collect all the coins to open the doors.
  • Rewarp uses teleportation where Celeste uses a dash: you outmaneuver danger, dodge traps and skip past barriers. Speed, precision and clever thinking are its keys.

Short levels with instant restarts are covered in the guide to precision platformers with instant restarts, and the platformer games page lists more.

Habits for dash-and-climb platformers

  1. Find the dash key first. It is X or Shift in Glimmer, Blocky Adventures and Lantern Wayfarner, and Shift in Neon Overdrive and Lumen Descent.
  2. Hold the jump key for height where the game says so. In Glimmer, holding Space, W or Up adds height.
  3. Use the checkpoints. Glimmer, Going Up Rooftop, Tower Platformer 3D and Lumen Descent all have them, and Lumen Descent adds R to retry.
  4. Treat stamina as a budget. Going Up Rooftop tells you to watch it, as Celeste limits how long Madeline can climb.
  5. Treat each fall as information. Sneaky Spikes tells you to watch for traps and try again after every death.
