Math Games Online: Timed Sums, Number Puzzles and More
Updated
Math games online come in three main types. In timed games you pick the right answer before the clock runs out; in action games the answer is a lane, a basket or a target; in number puzzles you place or combine numbers at your own pace. Below is how each type plays, with games from the math games collection.
Types of math games
| Type | How it plays | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Timed answers | A sum appears, you tap the right answer before time runs out | Quick Math |
| Math in action games | Steer, shoot or kick toward the correct answer | Car Evolution Pro : Math Gates |
| Number puzzles | Place, combine or sort numbers with no rush | Crossmath Challenge |
| Formula idle games | Upgrade the numbers in a formula and watch them grow | Formula Upgrade Idle |
Timed answer games
These are the fastest math games: one question at a time and a short clock.
- Quick Math mixes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; tap the correct answer before the timer runs out.
- QuickSolve gives you a few seconds per question. One mistake costs a life, and running out of lives means starting over.
- Brain Workout lets you choose addition, multiplication, subtraction or division, then pick the answer from 4 blocks at the bottom.
- Correct Math sticks to addition and subtraction, with three answers to choose from.
- Solve or Suffer sets you in a strict math classroom: three wrong answers and you fail. It starts with addition and moves through subtraction, multiplication and division over 50+ levels, with mouse, arrow key or tap controls.
- Turbo Tables is all multiplication against the clock, with power-ups.
- Comparing Numbers? – Quick Math Game shows two numbers and asks you to tap >, < or =.
- Num Blast has you tap numbers in the right order, with a Classic mode, a 60-second Sprint, a Daily Challenge and a Math Blast mode.

Habits for timed math
- Check the last digit first. The last digit of a product depends only on the last digits of the two numbers: 27 × 4 must end in 8, so any answer ending in another digit is out.
- Estimate before you calculate. 48 + 37 is close to 50 + 40, so an answer near 85 is the one to check.
- Use odd and even. Two odd numbers add up to an even number, and any number times an even number is even.
- Compare from the left. For >, < and =, the first digit that differs decides it, once both numbers have the same count of digits.
- Do not guess in games with lives. In QuickSolve one wrong answer costs a life, and in Solve or Suffer three wrong answers end the run.
Math inside action games
Here the sum is part of a race, a match or a fight.
- Car Evolution Pro : Math Gates puts a math question above each gate, with two answer lanes. Steer through the right one with a swipe or the arrow keys; enough correct answers pass the level and add a new part to your car.
- Mathematics Frenzy is a runner with math gates that change your number as you go.
- Join Numbers starts you with a number; it must be greater than the number on each gate to get through.
- Smart Basketball has you shoot a basket at the correct answer, and Goal the Answer has you kick the ball into the net that holds it.
- Halloween Math Shot puts numbers on bat wings; you shoot them with the pumpkin that holds the right comparison sign, moving with Z and X.
- CrazyMath fires a bullet at the bug in front of you for each correct answer.
- Math Speed Racing Factors fuels your car with gas cans that hold a factor of your car's number. Run out of gas or hit another car and the game is over.
- MathPup Golf 4 Algebra has 30 holes with no time limit. You answer a basic algebra question to play each hole, and another one to remove the penalty if the ball lands in water or sand.
- Digit Doom and Fantasy Math Number turn correct answers into attacks on monsters.

Number puzzles with no rush
Puzzles give you time to think, and most have no clock at all.
- Crossmath Challenge is a crossword of sums. Drag number tiles into the grid so every equation works across and down. Undo removes your last tile, Shuffle reorders the tray, and Hint fills a cell a limited number of times.
- Craft Number asks you to combine numbers to reach a target value.
- RiddleMath gives you a set of numbers to place into empty spots in a puzzle.
- Find the Missing Number shows a number sequence with a gap to fill.
- Order of Operation Challenge gives you an expression and four answers, in Easy, Normal, Hard or Pro mode, with 15 questions per level.
- Keep Prime Numbers has you drop the composite numbers out of a stack while keeping the prime.
- Primes sends balls marked 7 or 9, and you swap the bowls so each ball lands with the prime or the non-prime group.
- Slice And Solve builds puzzles around fractions: slice objects into equal parts.
Order of operations in one line
Order of Operation Challenge follows the BODMAS or PEMDAS order: brackets first, then powers and roots, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. So 6 + 4 × 3 is 18, not 30. Wikipedia's article on the order of operations gives the same ranking.
Primes in one line
A prime number has exactly two divisors, 1 and itself: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13. That is why 7 goes to the prime bowl in Primes and 9, which is 3 × 3, does not.

Number-merging puzzles are covered in how to play 2048, and number grids in sudoku rules and tips.
Idle games built on formulas
A few math games are idle games, where numbers grow while you decide what to upgrade.
- Formula Upgrade Idle has you upgrade the variables of a formula to reach the highest number, with 30 buildings and prestige for more exponent.
- Multiplier Grid gives every cell of a grid a multiplier on your income. The grid grows from 2x2 to 10x10, and hotkeys handle upgrades: U for speed, A to ascend, G to grade up.
What prestige means and when to use it is explained in idle and clicker games.
Math games to play with someone
Chopsticks is the finger-counting hand game in a browser. Each player starts with two hands, each showing one finger, and the goal is to knock out both of the other player's hands while keeping one of yours. In the usual rules, described on Wikipedia, tapping a hand adds your hand's fingers to it, and a hand that reaches five is out. House rules differ on what happens above five, so check the game's own screen.
Math Signs Game works the other way round from a timed sum: the numbers are given and you pick the missing sign, +, −, × or ÷, as fast as you can. Its description invites you to play with friends or beat your own high score.
