Shooting Games Online Tips: Aim, Reload, Cover and Recoil

In shooting games online most fights are won by three habits: aim before you fire, reload before the gun runs dry, and stay behind cover while you do it. Recoil matters as well, but only in the games that model it, so check each game's own description before you plan around it. Below are those habits, each with games from the shooting games category whose instructions say how they handle it.

Aim: set it up, then train it
In keyboard-and-mouse shooters the mouse aims, the left button fires and the right button aims down the sights. Masked Special Forces, Armed Forces.io and Infiltration of the Police Base all use that layout, and in HOLLOW PASS the right button works the scope or the suppressor.

- Bottle Breakshot adds power to aim: you set the strength and distance of each throw and choose from 10 different balls.
Aim habits:
- Set your sensitivity once and keep it, so your hand learns one speed. HOLLOW PASS lets you set it before every session.
- Read your accuracy, not only your kills. HOLLOW PASS reports both.
- Account for movement and distance on moving targets, as Real Bottle Shooter 3D asks.
Reload and ammo
Most shooters reload on R: HOLLOW PASS, Assault Time, Legends Arena and Infiltration of the Police Base all do. What changes is how much a reload costs you.
- Merge Gun Fps Shooting Zombie warns that zombies and crows keep coming while you reload. Before each battle you buy guns and merge two of the same into a stronger one with faster ammo in the clip, and you can shoot the explosive oil cans on the ground when they get close.
- Scary Night throws scary objects that move fast and unpredictably, and asks you to watch your ammunition and reload at the right time.
- Stellar Bastion aims for you, so every decision is where you stand. Waves escalate every 13 seconds, and kills drop machine guns, shotguns and rocket launchers with limited ammo, while your MK-1 sidearm never runs dry. Keys 1 to 4 switch guns and Shift is a combat roll.
Ammo habits:
- Reload between fights, not in the middle of one.
- Keep a fallback. In Stellar Bastion the sidearm never empties, so switch to it when a dropped gun runs out.
- Go back for your gun. In HOLLOW PASS you respawn with the pistol, and your rifle stays where you dropped it.
Cover: shoot, then hide
- HOLLOW PASS bots take cover and shoot back, and so can you: hold C to crouch, press Space and then C to crouch-jump onto cover, and hold Shift to walk.
- Lone Sniper gives you 50 seconds to destroy every enemy. Take a shot, then hide behind cover so that you do not come under return fire.
- Agent Hunt Shoot tells you to hide behind the crates while you hunt the enemies down, and each win lets you choose stronger guns, bombs or helmets.
- Crazy Strike Force crouches on C, slides on Q while running and runs on Left Shift. Legends Arena also crouches on C.
The pattern is the same everywhere: show yourself, shoot, and get back behind something before the other side answers.
Recoil: only in some games
Recoil is the kick of a gun that pushes your aim off after each shot. Only some shooters model it, so check the game's description before you plan around it.
- Zombie War 2D says its shooting system models accuracy, recoil, stabilization and aiming speed, reloading all at once or one cartridge at a time, and automatic, semi-automatic and burst fire. In a game like this, fire in short bursts and let the aim settle between them.
- FlipTheGun and Double Gun turn recoil into the whole game. Each shot kicks the gun upward, and you keep it climbing by firing. FlipTheGun hands you ammo during the roll and coins for better guns; Double Gun gives you two guns, each firearm with its own shot physics.
Shooters against people online
- Legends Arena is a team shooter: pair up for duo fights, or pick 3v3 or 5v5 team deathmatch.
- Masked Special Forces has the standard layout plus G for dynamite, H for a medkit and E or F to pick up a weapon.
- Armed Forces.io asks you to find and eliminate enemies spread across a map, with stealth and careful aim.
- Shoter.io is a fast 3D online shooter: WASD to move, the right button to aim and G for a grenade.

Puzzle shooters
When the target is hard to reach, the shot is a puzzle. Ricochet Arrow: Shooting Game has 50 levels of skeletons and unlimited arrows, with one rule: aim before you shoot, and do not hit yourself.
