Games Like Tetris: Block Puzzles to Play in Your Browser

Updated

Games like Tetris are block puzzles built on one rule: complete a line and it clears. In Tetris the pieces fall and you steer them, while in many newer games you place each piece yourself. Tetris was made in the 1980s by the Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov. The games below are original titles by independent studios, some with falling blocks and some with grids.

How Tetris works

Tetris has seven shapes, each made of four squares. They fall one at a time into a tall, narrow well. You slide each piece sideways, rotate it and drop it faster if you want to.

A row filled with no gaps disappears, and everything above it moves down. The game ends when the stack grows too tall for a new piece to enter, and pieces fall faster as you clear more lines.

So the skill is fitting shapes together with no gaps while the stack rises. The games below keep some of that and change the rest.

Games where pieces fall

In these, something comes down, and you decide where it ends up.

  • Drop & Merge 2048 mixes falling blocks with 2048. Each numbered cube falls down one of five lanes. Move it sideways, speed up the fall or drop it at once, and matching cubes merge into a higher value. You play against the blocks stacking too high.
  • ColorDock has colored keys raining down from above. Slide the matching boxes into place before the keys land, and match each falling key with the box of the same color. One wrong match and the stack fills up fast.
  • Sand Blocks gives you three block shapes at a time. Place each one anywhere on the grid, in any order. A placed block breaks into sand that flows according to its shape, and a full horizontal line of one sand color clears. The game ends when the sand rises past the limit line.
  • Cargo Captain is a physics puzzle where cranes drop containers and you play the captain. Walk into a crate to push it into a gap, and fill a horizontal row with crates to clear it. It has five stages, from sunny ports to jungle rivers, and bomb and freezing power-ups.
  • Stack Tide is a stacking game with rotation. Drop and rotate drifting shapes to build the tallest tower you can. Missed pieces fall into the water, and the sea rises faster.

If the 2048 part of Drop & Merge 2048 is new to you, how to play 2048 explains the number puzzle.

Block puzzles where you place the pieces

In these you place the pieces yourself. You drag a shape onto a grid, and in most of them full rows and full columns both clear.

  • Blokku is played on an 11 by 11 grid. Drag and drop pieces, fill complete rows and columns to clear them, and watch the board: once it fills up, the game is over. It has a day and night mode.
  • Electrix also uses an 11 by 11 grid, with neon blocks. Complete rows and columns, and the more lines you clear at once, the higher your score.
  • Block Puzzle: Brain Blast has you drag and place colorful blocks onto the board and complete full rows or columns. Plan your moves and build combinations for a higher score.
  • PixelBlock takes classic block puzzle mechanics and adds explosive effects: you do not just drop blocks and clear lines, you smash block art into pieces. You drag and place the blocks with the mouse.
  • Hexa Tiles Puzzle Game swaps squares for hexagons. Drag or tap hex-shaped pieces onto the board, fit them without overlap, and clear full lines and hex patterns. When no piece fits, it is game over.
  • Blocks Puzzle 2 asks you to drop blocks to create and destroy full lines, both vertically and horizontally. Every level brings a new challenge.
  • Blast Round Puzzle Block adds levels, bosses and a Mana Power bar. Each piece has a rotate button above it, and Hammer and Shuffle power-ups help when the board gets crowded.

The habits that keep these boards open are in block puzzle tips. More puzzles are on the puzzles page.

Puzzles where you fill a frame

Here the goal is to fit every shape into a fixed area.

  • Block Master: Polygonal Puzzle gives you polygons instead of squares. Fit them across the whole playing field to win. Levels are grouped from easiest to hardest, and there is a leaderboard.
  • Cat Block Puzzle is a tangram-style puzzle. Drag and drop uniquely shaped sleepy cats into the grid to fill the board. The grids grow larger and the cat shapes get trickier as you go.
  • Block Triangle has you arrange shapes made of triangles to fill various designs. Its description says the blocks cannot be rotated.

Tips for line-clearing puzzles

  1. Keep the surface flat. A bumpy stack leaves gaps that only one shape fits.
  2. Avoid holes. A gap under a piece blocks every line above it until you clear the piece.
  3. Look at all the pieces you have before you place the first. Sand Blocks, for example, gives you three shapes at a time, and a hard shape is easier to place early.
  4. Check the controls before you start. Stack Tide rotates with Q and E or the up and down arrows, while Block Triangle does not rotate at all.
  5. Clear lines before the stack gets high. A tall stack leaves no room for a mistake.

Games like Tetris FAQ

What is the difference between falling-block and block-fitting puzzles?

In a falling-block game such as Tetris, the game hands you pieces and gravity sets the pace. In a block-fitting puzzle such as Blokku, you drag pieces onto an 11 by 11 grid yourself.

Can I rotate the pieces?

It depends on the game. In Stack Tide you rotate with Q and E or the up and down arrow keys, and Blast Round Puzzle Block has a rotate button above each piece. In Block Triangle the blocks cannot be rotated.

Can I play these on a phone or a computer?

Yes. The site works in the browser of a phone, a tablet and a computer. Blokku and Electrix play with a mouse click or a tap, Hexa Tiles Puzzle Game with a drag or a tap, and Drop & Merge 2048 takes the arrow keys or A and D on a keyboard.

Are these games free?

Yes. They play free in the browser, with no install and no registration.

Keep the surface flat, leave no holes, and a long run is mostly a matter of patience.
