Browser Game Not Loading: How to Fix It, Step by Step

Updated

When a browser game will not load, reload the page first, then open the game in a private window: if it works there, an extension or data stored by your browser is the cause. If the game frame stays black or stops at a loading bar, check that WebGL and graphics acceleration are switched on. The steps below run from the quickest fix to the slowest.

Quick fixes, in order

  1. Give it a few seconds. Some games show a short ad before they start, and the game frame can stay dark while it loads. Wait for the countdown or the skip button before you decide the game is broken.
  2. Reload the page. Press F5 or Ctrl + R on Windows, or click the reload arrow next to the address bar. Ctrl + Shift + R (Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac) reloads without the copy your browser has cached.
  3. Close tabs you are not using. Games, 3D ones above all, need memory and graphics power, and other open tabs can use some of it.
  4. Check that JavaScript is allowed. Browser games are built on it. In Chrome, open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Site settings, then JavaScript.
  5. Test a private window. Chrome calls it Incognito. If the game loads there, the cause is most likely an extension or stored site data, not the game.
  6. Turn all extensions off, then back on one at a time. Switch them all off and reload, then turn them back on one by one until the game breaks again. The last one you turned on is the cause.
  7. Check WebGL and graphics acceleration. The next section shows how.
  8. Update the browser and restart it. In Chrome, an update option appears in the menu when one is waiting.
  9. Try a second browser. If the game runs there, the first browser needs one of the fixes above.
  10. Restart your modem and router if every site is slow, not only games.

Google keeps its own checklist for Chrome in Fix videos and games that won't play. It covers JavaScript, extensions, cached data, updates and the internet connection.

Black screen or stuck on loading: WebGL and graphics acceleration

Many browser games, 3D and 2D, draw their graphics through WebGL, the browser's link to your graphics chip. When WebGL is not available, a game can stay black or never get past its loading screen.

  • Open get.webgl.org. If you see a spinning cube, WebGL works in this browser.
  • If the page says WebGL is disabled or unavailable, update your graphics drivers, as the page itself suggests.
  • In Chrome, open Settings, then System, and turn on Use graphics acceleration when available. Chrome then asks you to relaunch it.
  • In Firefox, the switch is called Use hardware acceleration when available. It sits under Performance in the settings and shows once you uncheck Use recommended performance settings.

Ad blockers and other extensions

Some games wait for an ad to load before they start. A content blocker that stops that ad, or the script that loads it, can leave such a game waiting on a dark frame. If a game works only with your extensions off, check whether your blocker can be turned off for a single site.

Two things not to do. Do not turn off antivirus or other security software: none of the fixes here needs it. And do not install a plugin or a "game booster" that a pop-up asks for, because a browser game needs neither.

Clearing site data: the last step, and what it costs

Clearing your browser's data fixes problems caused by old stored files, but it also removes what sites keep in your browser. On Jumpcade that includes your favorites, your recently played games and your streak: they live in the browser you use, so clearing its data starts them over.

Run the private-window test first, because it shows whether stored data is the problem without deleting anything. If you still need to clear data, Chrome lists two separate boxes: Cached images and files, the stored copies of pages and game files, and Cookies and other site data. Clear the first one on its own before you try the second.

When only one game fails

If other games load and one does not, the problem is most likely that game rather than your browser. Pick another from the same category, such as racing, puzzles or quick hypercasual games.

A large 3D game usually asks more of a device than a simple 2D one. If a 3D game fails, open a 2D game such as 12 MiniBattles: if it loads, your browser works, and the 3D game may need more memory or graphics power than your device can give it. On a Chromebook with little memory, games to play on a Chromebook sorts lighter picks from heavier ones. These games make a quick test.

On a phone or tablet

  • Close apps that run in the background.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out the connection.
  • Update the browser from the app store, or update iOS or iPadOS to update Safari on an iPhone or iPad.
  • Check that the game lists touch controls. A game built for keyboard and mouse can load and still give you no way to play on a touch screen; keyboard and touch controls shows what usually replaces the keys.
  • If the game loads but shows as a narrow strip, see how to make a browser game full screen.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my games not loading?

The usual causes are a slow or broken connection, an extension that blocks scripts, WebGL or graphics acceleration switched off, an out-of-date browser, or old data stored for the site. The private-window test separates extensions and stored data from the rest.

What do you do when a game won't load?

Reload the page, wait for any ad countdown to finish, then work through the quick fixes above in order. Stop at the first step that works.

Why is a game stuck on the loading screen?

It may still be downloading, it may be waiting for an ad that a blocker stopped, or the browser may not be able to run its graphics. Check WebGL first, then try a private window.

Will clearing my cache delete my favorites and streak?

Clearing cookies and site data starts them over, because favorites, history and streak live in the browser you use. Clearing only cached images and files leaves cookies in place.

If none of these steps helps, try the same game again later or on another device.
